BOT 360F - Families of Vascular Plants

Quiz 4 13-Oct-11

(1) Which of the following terms apply (not necessarily exclusively) to Bryophytes? The ones that do are shaded.

megasporangium

spore

meiosis

leptosporangiate

tracheid

sperm

ovule

sporangium

megagametophyte

dominant gametophyte

(2) What might be some consequences of the difference between (a) dispersal by means of spores and (b) dispersal by means of seeds?

The principal difference between spores and seeds is in size and complexity. Some consequences of this difference would include the limited amount of nutrients that can be packaged into spores, compared with seeds. This in turn might affect the range of habitats in which germinating offspring (gametophytes in the case of spores; sporophytes in the case of seeds) are able to become established and survive to reproductive maturity.
