Bus departs St. George campus 1300h; arrival at JH and set-up; intoduction to JH and Woody plant (vegetative) morphology; field notebook.

Orientation (show-and-tell re assigned plant families).

25 May

Plant reproduction; free-sporing, seedless plants: "Bryophytes" and "Pteridophytes"

Gymnosperms.

Introduction to Angiosperm morphology (vegetative, reproductive); reproductive morphology; homospory and heterospory; heterospory and seeds.

Tuesday
26 May

Plant identification (have a look at this page, and substitute genera or species for "families"); Introduction to plant collecting.

Keying, using the keys in Wildflowers of Ontario; plant collecting (including making and using a plant press).

Curation of the plant samples collected during the day, and identification; the KSR teaching herbarium.

Vegetation sampling; overstory sampling (sugarbush).

Vegetation sampling; overstory sampling (old growth).

Forest structure data analysis; Calculating Importance Values Using the Point-Center Quarter Method - the PCQM Calculator
Experimental design.

Road Trip, Day 1: Krug Forest.

Unpack and clean up after road trip.

Vegetation sampling; understory sampling. Solo afternoon. Prepare and hand in a 1-page study plan for your project.

Marking Scheme

Marks will be based on class participation (30%), on a (very) small plant collection related to your project (20%), and on the results of the research project (50%). Part of the participation mark will be based on a journal kept over the two weeks of the course. Each student will give an oral presentation of the results of their project and be expected to turn in their field notes (=journal), collections, and data. No other formal written reports are required, and there will be no formal exam. Note: All requirements for the course must be completed by the end of the course on 6 June 2009.
